Frequently Asked Questions

I just replaced a control unit, and my scan tool can’t communicate with it. Can you still program it?

Probably not. With few exceptions, even unprogrammed modules will communicate. Look for programming or configuration fault codes. If you have these, we should be able to program it.

Can I use used parts?

It depends. We will do everything necessary to properly program your unit, but we can’t guarantee the outcome when used parts are involved and we accept no responsibility for any programming-related failures. We require a non-refundable deposit before scheduling a job with used parts.

  • We do not program used airbag modules. Used airbag control modules are never recommended and generally can’t be reprogrammed or recoded for use in another vehicle. Used airbags are a huge liability risk for YOU. Some used bags may be units that were subject to a recall. These are considered dangerous and, when deployed, may release debris that can cause injury or death.
  • For engine and trans controllers, the only vehicles that won’t ever accept used modules are BMW/Mini, Hyundai/Kia, Mercedes Benz, some late model GM, and Chrysler/FCA/Stellantis vehicles. For these vehicles, the module must be reconditioned or new. There are companies that can “re-virginize” these units and we hope to offer the service soon.
  • For all other makes: we have had reasonably high success rates with used units, and we will try everything within our arsenal to make your used unit work.
I'm Changing my engine computer. What do I need to do?

The engine computer is considered a theft-related part and therefore requires some info from the vehicle owner before we can program it. Go to our website: www.ecftmobile.com and download the D-1 Owner Authorization Form and have the owner fill it out as best they can. There is some info our tech will fill out. WITHOUT THIS INFORMATION WE CAN NOT TOUCH THE CAR

Once that is filled out, provide photos of:

  • The completed D-1 Form
  • The vehicle owner’s driver’s license
  • The vehicle registration

Text these images to 610-389-4312 or email: D1@ecftmobile.com

Don’t forget to schedule the job. Simply uploading this info will not get you on the schedule.

GM:
Just install and schedule us. We'll use the VIN to get the programming info from GM.

FORD: Ford’s theft deterrent system requires 2 keys to get the vehicle to start. Some Fords only require a parameter reset, but occasionally that doesn’t work. We strongly recommend having 2 OEM keys present so we can do the job in one visit. If we must return later to complete the job, you will be charged again. Please be sure to have two OEM keys present. If the vehicle only has one, we suggest getting a new one from the dealer. Aftermarket or locksmith keys are frequently clones of an existing key. Even though 2 physical keys are present, the vehicle’s system will only see one key and will fail the theft deterrent relearn.

FCA: Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth, RAM, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo vehicles use a four-digit SKIM code. On older vehicles, we may ask the shop to contact their dealer to get the code. We have tools that can extract the code, but it doesn’t always work. On later model vehicles-2018 and up, we need to use our locksmith license to retrieve the code.

VW, Audi, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, and Kia: Provide the above-mentioned forms and we’ll do the rest.

Mercedes Benz: We have the factory tool, but strongly recommend going to the dealer. You will likely have difficulty purchasing theft-related parts.

We need ADAS calibrations carried out. Can you do them outside?

We don’t recommend it. When it comes to windshield cameras that require targeting, NO. The vehicle needs to be indoors, on level ground, and in a well-lit area. We have a sophisticated laser leveling system that can compensate for slight out-of-level areas, but the set-up time is significant.

We need ADAS Calibrations. Should the bumper be on or off?

It’s always a good idea to call us first, but here are some general guidelines. For Subaru, Toyota/Lexus, and Honda/Acura: the rear cover should be off for blind-spot calibrations. We usually need to tweak the mounting bracket to get it in spec. All other makes can have the rear cover on the car. For front radar units, the simple rule is that if you can see the radar or there’s a removable access panel, the cover can be on the car. If the radar is completely covered by the bumper cover, we probably need it off. We frequently see bent mounting brackets on Nissan and Honda vehicles.

Will you come to my house or work to fix my vehicle?

Currently, we are strictly business-to-business. Our business is not structured or insured to work for individuals at the retail level. We can, however, answer your questions or recommend shops in your area that we work closely with.

How did you get involved with this line of work?

I didn’t listen to my parents when they told me to be a Doctor.

Are you hiring?

If you’re an experienced dealer technician and you think you have what it takes to be a member of our team, we’d love to speak to you!
